A classic mountain stage alternating between long climbs and extended downhill false flats. The riders will tackle the climbs of Forca Caruso (14 km), Gioia Vecchio via Passo del Diavolo (14 km), and the final ascent to Aremogna, which stretches for over 18 km. The roads are often narrow, with some demanding descents. Urban areas include standard traffic obstacles like roundabouts and road humps. 
Final kilometers 
Starting after Roccaraso, the final climb is about 10 km long, averaging 5.7%. The first section is relatively steady, followed by a short downhill false flat. The last 2 km rise at 7%, with the steepest ramps – around 12% – located in the final kilometer. The surface is asphalt, and the road is 7 meters wide.

SAN DEMETRIO NE’ VESTINI

Overview

San Demetrio Ne’ Vestini is located 15 kilometers from L’Aquila, in a panoramic position overlooking the Subequana valley. It is a charming village that combines history, art, culture, nature and tranquility, offering visitors an authentic experience in the heart of Abruzzo.

The origins of San Demetrio nei Vestini date back to the Middle Ages, specifically between the 10th and 11th centuries. It is believed that its name derives from the Goddess Demeter (Ceres), a Greek divinity associated with agriculture and fertility.

It is an excellent starting point for excursions in the Sirente Velino Regional Natural Park, with opportunities for trekking and other outdoor activities. Nearby, you can also find the suggestive Stiffe Caves and Lake Sinizzo.

Gastronomy

The cuisine in this area of the inland in Abruzzo is characterized by simple and genuine dishes, based on local products. Among the most well-Known specialties are:

* Bread: in the town of San Demetrio Ne’ Vestini bread is a strong tradition linked to the “Senatore Cappelli wheat”. Every year, around mid-August, the wheat and bread festival is held.

* Arrosticini: a marinated and grilled mutton skewers.

* Fresh pasta: typically served with meat sauces.

* Black truffle: particularly the one originated from the Subequana Valley, is a highly prized product and boasts distinctive characteristics that make it appreciated in gastronomy.

* Cured meats: – Pork sausage – Ventricina – Salami – Guanciale – Ham – Coppa – Lonza

* Cheeses: – Pecorino d’Abruzzo – Scamorza – Caciocavallo – Ricotta

Wine and beverages

Subequana Valley has a long and rich wine-making tradition, and in recent years it has seen a significant increase in the quality of its wines. Here are some of the best high-altitude wines, divided by type of:

Red Wines:

* Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC: This is undoubtedly the most representative red grape variety of Abruzzo.

* Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo DOC: Although technically a rosé wine, Cerasuolo has a very strong personality and is often considered a “light red”.

White Wines:

* Pecorino Terre Aquilane IGT: This native grape variety is experiencing a true renaissance and produces white wines of great character.

Craft Beer: several types of craft beer are produced in this valley, with a focus-bottom-fermented varieties.

Points of interest

Stiffe Caves

In the heart of the Sirente – Velino Regional Park, in the small hamlet of Stiffe, the imposing rock face stands out, in which opens the cavity that leads us inside the wonderful Stiffe Caves. Crystal-clear pools of water alternate with thunderous roar of imposing waterfalls that literally leave you breathless. The underground river called Rio Gamberale, fed by sinkholes located on the Rocche Plateau, accompanies us along the entire route.

Sinizzo Lake

A beautiful lake, fed by two gushing springs: Sinizzo and Acqua Tina. This charming oasis welcomes us with its emerald-green waters and its shored shaded by weeping willows. A short walk takes us to the clear springs where we can quench our thirst with some fresh water! When the weather permits, it is possible to admire the pool of water reflecting the colors of the sky and the soft light of sunset painting the blue sky with red and golden hues.

Villa Comunale

This is a beautiful and very popular green area for both tourists and locals. There is a brand new playground for children.

Via Crucis

This is a place of particular religious and landscape importance. Situated on Monte Santa Croce also called Monte del Calvario it overlooks and dominates the town of San Demetrio Ne’ Vestini. The route follows a path beginning at Via Cardabello and leads to the Church of Santa Croce, a further element of historical and cultural attraction, is situated on the top of the mountain.

ROCCARASO (Aremogna)

Overview

Roccaraso (province: L’Aquila), is located south of the Cinquemiglia and Quarto Grande plateaus, with the Aremogna plateau and the Roccaraso mountains towering to the west.

Main sights in the village include the Rocca, an ancient castle tower dating from before the 16th century, which was remodelled in the 17th century. The church of Santa Maria Assunta, just opposite the tower, contains an original silver statue of St. Hippolytus, the patron saint of Roccaraso. Nearby sights also include the church of San Bernardino, built in 1851, and the 18-century church of San Bartolomeo in Pietransieri.

Roccaraso, and particularly Aremogna, is best known for its cutting-edge ski facilities: with gondolas, chairlifts, ski lifts and over 60 kilometres of slopes—including runs for snowboarding, Nordic skiing and ski touring—the resort caters to all needs, from children, through beginners to experts. In summer, the vast surrounding woodland is a hiker’s paradise.

Food

Local culinary specialties include gnocchi, polenta with sautéed pork or mutton ragout, and typical desserts such as ‘scaglie’, ‘amaretti’ and ‘pizzelle’.
