A mountain stage with multiple climbs. After a short uphill start, the riders face the climb to Forcella di Acciano (long stretches over 10%). The route then includes the Valico di San Leonardo and the Forca di Penne before the final climb into Penne. Mountain roads dominate the stage, often narrow with some technical descents.
Final kilometers
The final 5 km are uphill. The steepest section kicks in at 3 km to go, with gradients reaching 10%, lasting until the final corner. From there, it’s a 200 m asphalt straight to the line, 7 meters wide.

Overview
Tocco da Casauria (province: Pescara) sits at the foot of Mount Morrone, in the western part of the Pescara Valley in the Conca Casauriense, and within the Maiella National Park. The town was simply called ‘Tocco’ until 1862, but it was later renamed so that it would not be mistaken with a village of the same name in the province of Benevento. The added name reflects the historical traditions of the famous nearby temple of Casauria.
Standing in the highest part of the town, strategically facing the canyons of Popoli, is the Caracciolo castle. The fortress, first rebuilt under Frederick II, was reconstructed again by the De Tortis (the Lords of Tocco) after the 1456 earthquake.
Centerbe (or centerba) is the town’s traditional liqueur. It is made by distilling plants and herbs picked in the nearby mountains, following the recipe of a pharmacist who moved from Molise to Tocco, since 1817.
The area, surrounded by lush greenery, boasts large woodlands with a network of hiking trails leading to the top of Monte Rotondo, and of mountain biking routes.
Penne
Overview
Penne (province: Pescara) lies between the valleys of the Tavo and Fino rivers, halfway between the Adriatic Sea and the Gran Sasso.
The imposing Porta San Francesco, made from traditional red bricks that are the hallmark of the town’s architecture, is the main entrance to the old town.
A large statue of St. Francis of Assisi testifies to Penne’s close ties with the saint. Main sights also include the cathedral (dedicated to St. Maximus and dating from before the year 1000), located on the Colle Sacro, and the church of San Domenico, with its stucco decorations and its wonderful polychrome marble altar. The 18-century Palazzo Castiglione stands on the Piazza Duomo.
The ideal destination for nature lovers is lake Penne, located within the “Lago di Penne” Nature Reserve.
Trippa alla pennese—a tasty tripe soup with parsley, bay leaves, mint, marjoram and chili peppers, served hot with grated pecorino or Parmesan cheese—is the king of local cuisine, along with arrosticini and ‘pecora alla callara’, which is Abruzzo’s traditional shepherd’s recipe—a hearty and tasty mutton stew.
