SILVI
Overview
Silvi, in the province of Teramo, is one of the most charming destinations along the Abruzzo coast, known as the “Perla dell’Adriatico”, a title bestowed upon it by Gabriele D’Annunzio. The town is divided into two distinct yet complementary areas: Silvi Marina and Silvi Paese, both rich in character and tradition.
Silvi Marina is the seaside heart of the town, featuring wide stretches of golden sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters that have been repeatedly recognized for their quality. The seafront promenade, lined with restaurants, cafés, and beach resorts, offers a lively atmosphere ideal for relaxation and entertainment.
Silvi Paese, by contrast, preserves the charm of a medieval hilltop village, perched 240 metres above sea level. Its narrow streets, churches, and scenic viewpoints tell centuries of history while offering breathtaking views over the Adriatic Sea.
The historic centre is supported by a picturesque crown of brick arches, a distinctive feature of its ancient urban structure.

Food
Silvi’s culinary tradition combines the flavours of the sea and the hills, offering a cuisine deeply rooted in history and authenticity.
In Silvi Marina, seafood specialties take centre stage, including spaghetti alle vongole, grilled fish, fried seafood, and the famous Brodetto alla Silvarola, an ancient fish stew prepared with the local catch according to a recipe handed down through generations of fishermen.
Slow cooking and the traditional practice known as vuscicare (gently shaking the pan) help preserve the dish’s flavour and texture.
In the hilly inland areas, rural traditions feature arrosticini, cured meats, pecorino cheese, extra virgin olive oil, vegetables, and liquorice, accompanied by renowned wines such as Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and Trebbiano.
Other local specialties include spaghetti con le paparazze (small local clams), sea snails known as caracò, peppers with salted sardines (pipindun e sardell), and papalin, tiny fish coated in batter and fried. These dishes are authentic expressions of Silvi’s culinary heritage.
Drinks
Silvi boasts a well-established food and wine tradition enhanced by outstanding wines produced on the hills overlooking the Adriatic Sea.
Among the most representative are Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, known for its rich and full-bodied character, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, a fresh and fragrant white wine that pairs perfectly with traditional seafood dishes, and Cerasuolo, a vibrant rosé with a bright colour.
Alongside wine production, one of the area’s signature products is liquirizia and the traditional liquore alla liquirizia, made from the valuable root that has been cultivated in this region for centuries.The natural presence of liquorice along the Abruzzo coastline encouraged the development of an ancient tradition of harvesting and processing, which is still carried on today by local producers. The wines and liqueurs represent genuine local excellences, telling the story, flavours, and identity of Silvi.
Points of Interest
CHIESA DEL SANTISSIMO SALVATORE, SILVI PAESE
The Chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore is the oldest church in Silvi Paese, dating back to the 11th century.
Located in the historic centre, it is an important example of Romanesque architecture. The façade is asymmetrical, featuring a bell tower added in the 18th century. The current entrance is located on the side, while the original entrance was positioned on the northern façade.
Inside, the church consists of a single nave divided into four bays. Two ancient holy water fonts made from reused materials can still be seen. Of particular importance is the 13th-century fresco depicting Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The altarpiece portrays the Institution of the Eucharist with the presence of Saint Nicholas.
Also noteworthy is the finely crafted 18th-century wooden bust of Saint Leo, the patron saint of Silvi.
The church preserves valuable artistic and historical testimonies from different periods and, despite undergoing several restoration campaigns over the centuries, has retained its remarkable cultural significance.
PIAZZA MARCONI AND THE MONUMENT TO SOLIDARITY (TO FREEDOM) BY IRENEO JANNI
The fountain of Piazza Marconi is located in the heart of the seafront area of Silvi Marina.
At the centre of the square stands the Monument to Solidarity (To Freedom) by sculptor Ireneo Janni. The artwork is a monumental six-metre-high bronze sculpture depicting an angel rescuing a fisherman in danger among the waves. The scene conveys a powerful message of solidarity and hope, while the sea in the background enhances the emotional impact of the composition.
The monument is set within a fountain consisting of five basins at different levels. Together, the sculpture, fountain, and surrounding landscape form a single artistic installation.
Today, the square is an important gathering place for both residents and visitors, while the monument remains one of the most iconic symbols of Silvi Marina.
BELVEDERE OF SILVI PAESE
The Belvedere of Silvi Paese is located at the easternmost point of the historic village.
It offers magnificent panoramic views of the Adriatic coastline and the surrounding countryside. From this viewpoint, visitors can admire the sea, beaches, and coastal towns stretching along the shore.
The panorama also includes a broad plain and gentle rolling hills. Characteristic calanchi, distinctive clay erosion formations typical of the region, are clearly visible. The surrounding hills are covered with vineyards and olive groves, making the landscape even more evocative.
The small square is equipped with benches where visitors can relax and enjoy the scenery. Walking along the circular streets of the village provides additional viewpoints and ever-changing perspectives. The Belvedere is considered one of the most beautiful and distinctive attractions of Silvi Paese.
CHIESA DI SANTA MARIA ASSUNTA
The Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta is located along the Adriatic State Road in Silvi.
Construction began in 1928 in the Neo-Gothic style. Work was interrupted by the Second World War and resumed in 1950. The church was completed and consecrated on 14 May 1953. The building is distinguished by a grand marble staircase and a tall bell tower. The interior consists of three naves with round arches supported by marble columns. The decoration is elegant and understated, featuring vaulted ceilings. The church houses numerous works by the painter and friar Father Giovanni Lerario. Among the most significant are L’Assunzione della Vergine in Cielo and Sant’Antonio che predica ai pesci. Father Lerario’s works are appreciated both in Italy and abroad. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta remains one of the principal places of worship and artistic interest in Silvi.
